Go tell it at Copenhagen
- Marisha Fonseca (TyBMM - St. Xavier's College)
This year the monsoon failed in large parts of the country. Freak storms and cyclones happen regularly. None of the seasons are the same. This is directly because of the irresponsible way we treat our environment. Climate Change is no myth, it is harsh reality. And the poor suffer the most because of this. Farmers lose their crops due to less rain, fishermen die in unexpected storms, and entire villages are swept away by floods. Food prices are steadily rising, which adds to the misery of the masses.
Yet, many of the richest countries in the world refuse to accept this reality. At the Copenhagen summit this December, the heads of the most powerful nations in the world will meet to discuss this issue. AICUF prays that developed countries realize the great obligation they have to the earth and that we see the birth of a new era in environmental responsibility.
The disastrous effects of climate change on the poor prompted this set of traditional carols for modern times.
Keynote Song– To the tune of Go tell it on the Mountains
Go tell at Copenhagen
Tell it to the rich folks everywhere
Go tell them what is happenin’
And we must save the world.
III– To the tune of Santa Claus is Coming
You better watch out
Your better not cry
Better not pout, I’m telling you why
Climate Change is happening around
It’s gonna meet you
Right at your door
Cyclones don’t care if you’re rich or poor
Climate Change is happening around.
You waste much precious fuel;
And dump trash in the seas
You keep on building tall dams
And you cut down forest trees
So
You better watch out….
IV– To the tune of Rudolph
Rudolph the red nosed reindeer
Had a very shiny nose
And all the other reindeer
Had skin just like a red rose
It made them all unhappy
They couldn’t see the joke,
Rudolph, and Santa’s reindeer
Were suffering from severe sunstroke!
Then one sunny Christmas Eve
Santa came to say
Reindeer, this won’t you delight
We gotta go round the whole world tonight
And they started their journey
Which ended them in misery
Rudolph and all the reindeer
Were drowned up in the rising sea!
V– To the tune of Jingle Bells
Blaring horns, blaring horns, blaring all the way
What a din, it’s to live in, aamchi Mumbai today!
Rolling down the road
In a brand new Chevrolet
Cutting through the smog
Coughing all the way!
Hanging from the train
It turns our hair to grey
What would you give, in here to live
With the stench of Mahim Bay!
VI- To the tune of O Come All Ye Faithful
O Go, all ye faithful
Concerned and committed,
Go tell the First World of Climate Change
Rich countries don’t care, poorer countries suffer
Go tell at Coopenhagen (3)
Let’s all save the earth.
