Every Nation has a flag and every company has its logo. So too the "Company of Jesus" which bears the word JESUS as its monogram. You will find it crafted simply or intricately in various designs and in various materials - wood, iron, stone - in every Jesuit house and impressed or inscribed on many Jesuit books.
IHS in medieval Latin represents a Greek MS abbreviation of the word IH(SOY)S, JES(US). It is also used as a symbol or monogram of the Sacred Name. Often looked upon as a Latin contraction, it is explained variously as standing for Iesus Hominum Salvator - Jesus Saviour of Men, In Hoc Signo (vinces) - In this sign (thou shalt conquer) or In Hac Salus - In this (cross) is salvation.
