Vatican Radio completes 75 Years of Broadcasting Service
Vatican Radio has over 300 journalists, most of them lay
people, from 59 different countries and a highly sophisticated
transmitting system with about 100 qualified technicians. The
Vatican Radio newscasts focus on a wide range of themes among
which are the safeguarding of human life and the family, the
defense of human rights and religious liberty, the explosion
of the phenomenon of terrorism and on the other hand, the
intensive ecumenical and inter-religious efforts aimed at
promoting peace. Programme formats range from newscasts to
in-depth features.
The Indian South Asian Desk of Vatican Radio has four language
sections, including English. The selection of the news is done
primarily from the Church’s point of view on current global
issues and her readiness to respond to the signs of the time.
We lay emphasis on those news items that pertain to the
burning issues in South Asia, for example the workings of the
Catholic Bishops’ Conferences in countries such as India,
Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangadesh, Nepal, the Philippines, etc.
We also take up issues such as social unrest, religious riots,
natural calamities and the Church’s concrete response in such
situations.
