Dates to Remember - September

  • 3rd September 1539: At his summer residence in Tivoli, outside Rome, Paul III gave his initial, oral approval of the Society of Jesus when Ignatius sent him a copy of the Formula of the Institute which described the proposed new religious order.
     

  • 4th September 1523: After several months of sailing and a week of waiting in the harbor at Joppa to disembark, Ignatius finally entered the city of Jerusalem as a pilgrim.
     

  • 8th September 1654: The death of Peter Claver, who ministered to slaves arriving in Cartegena, Columbia from Western Africa.
     

  • 9th September 1548: St. Francis Xavier set out for the Fishery Coast.
     

  • 13th September 1983: Fr. Peter-Hans Kolvenbach was elected the 29h Superior General of the Society of Jesus.
     

  • 15th September 1622: At Rome, the body of Cardinal Robert Bellarmine is transferred to its present location in the Church of the Gesú
     

  • 17th September 1593: Fr. Francis Toletus became the first Jesuit to be created a Cardinal.
     

  • 30th September 1572: The death of St. Francis Borgia, the Duke of Gandia and viceroy of Catalonia before becoming a Jesuit. He became the third general of the Society.
