French Jesuit review Etudes felicitated On June 13, at the “Maison de l’Unesco” in Paris, the
150th anniversary of Etudes, the well‐known review of the
French Jesuits, was celebrated. The founder, Ivan Gagarin, was
born a member of the Russian nobility. Later he converted to
Catholicism from his orthodox faith and then joined the
Society of Jesus. The review studies the changes in the
religious, intellectual and political events of France and, in
great measure, of Europe. Outstanding intellectuals (Paul
Claudel, Romano Guardini, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, Jean
Danielou, Henri De Lubac, M. Dominique Chenu, Yves Gongar) as
well as political leaders (Charles de Gaulle) appeared in the
pages of Etudes. In spite of the difficulties facing most of
the intellectual reviews nowadays, Etudes prints 15,000 each
month.
